LPA Independent Practice

Effective October 1, 2025, Licensed Psychological Associates (LPAs) are eligible to practice independently (unsupervised) as set forth in Session Law 2025-37/House Bill 67.

Those requirements include:

  • At least 4,000 post-licensure supervised practice hours accumulated during a period of 24 – 60 consecutive months;
  • All performance ratings for the 4,000 hours of post-licensure supervised practice hours were average or above average; and
  • having HSP-PA certification or, if licensed before June 30, 2013, having accumulated at least 4,000 hours of supervised practice experience in health services during a period of 24-60 consecutive months

LPAs must submit an application to the Board prior to beginning independent practice.

Forms & Instructions

Supervision Contract Form and Instructions

All Applicants, Provisionally Licensed Psychologists, and Licensed Psychological Associates are required to have a Supervision Contract Form on file at all times, regardless of employment setting or activities in which the individual may, or may not, currently be engaged (e.g., unemployment, practice in-state, practice out-of-state, work in another field, etc.).  A Supervision Contract Form must be filed within 30 days of a change in, or termination of, the conditions of the existing contract on file with the Board.  Contracts cover current activities.

Supervision Report Form

Reports must be filed within two weeks of a change in, or termination of, the conditions of a Supervision Contract Form already on file with the Board, or within 30 days of notification from the Board that reports must be filed.

Supervision Record Form

The Supervisor Record Form is a template that supervisors may use to keep records in accordance with Board Rule .2001(c)(8).

Reduced Supervision

Please note that the Board is no longer accepting the paper application forms for reduced supervision application.  If you believe you have met the requirements for reduced supervision you can now apply online. Please review the requirements under 21 NCAC 54 .2008 and let me know if you have any questions.

We have officially rolled out the new application process for reduced supervision. At this time please login to your licensee portal here, https://app.ncpsychologyboard.org/licensee/#/#/.

  1. Login to licensee portal
  2. Choose option #2 “Click here to initiate/submit a Supervision Report or Apply for Reduced Supervision.”
  3. Select the Current Contract you wish to close out the current level of supervision by clicking on “Complete Supervision Report”
    1. If you have more than once Supervision Contract on file you will need to Complete a Supervision Report for each one, however you will only need to apply for Reduced Supervision on one of them.
  4. At the top of the supervision report, click on the checkbox to “Include Application for Reduced Supervision”
  5. Complete all the required fields for the Supervision Report on the top half
  6. Complete all the required fields for Application of Reduced Supervision on the bottom half
  7. Print for your records
  8. Click Submit to send the report to your supervisor for approval.
  9. Once your supervisor has completed and signed the supervision report, your supervision level will be updated automatically. If there are any issues you will be contacted by Board staff.
  10. Submit a revised Supervision Contract to indicate the new level of supervision. DONOT forget this step. A supervision contract is required to be on file within 30 days of a change in supervision.
